Los Angeles, January 30: An emergency meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva on Thursday has declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
At least 170 people are dead and more than 8,100 cases have been reported in mainland China, as the virus spreads across the world. The number of coronavirus cases in China have exceeded the number of SARS infections worldwide. SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, infected 8,098 people worldwide with approximately 774 official SARS-related deaths.
WHO defines a public health emergency of international concern as “an extraordinary event” that constitutes a “public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease” and “to potentially require a coordinated international response.”
