US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided nearly 100 7-Eleven stores across the country on Wednesday, officials said.
The federal agents visited the convenience stores in 17 states, including California, and arrested at least 21 alleged undocumented immigrants.
This is the toughest action taken by the Trump administration to crack down on illegal immigrants and punish employers who provide them jobs. This latest action has put undocumented immigrants in fear and anxiety, and many immigrants have not reported to work because of fear of being caught by the immigration agents. “You never know. Federal agents might show up anytime”, said Antonio Santiago, an immigrant from Guatemala who has lived in the US illegally for 22 years.
Officials said the raids were carried out as a routine activity of the federal government to discourage franchise owners from hiring undocumented workers.
“Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,” acting ICE Director Thomas D. Homan said in a statement.
