Los Angeles, May 31:
The City of Los Angeles has extended the imposition of overnight curfew until Monday morning after a spate of violence and unrest went out of control. The curfew will start at 8 p.m. on Sunday night and will remain in effect until 5:30 a. m. on Monday, Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Sunday.
The overnight curfew was first imposed on Saturday night to maintain law and order, Garcetti said. “When times demand it, strong steps are required to bring peace back to our city.” On Saturday, the Mayor had requested over 1,000 national guards as the Los Angeles Police Department and local law enforcement agencies struggled to control arson and looting. Guardsmen patrolled the LA streets early Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles County officials proclaimed a countywide state of emergency to control violence and unrest. “This emergency comes as we are in the midst of battling another emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said Sunday in a statement.
